Artist Statement

This box symbolizes the theme of childhood. As I recall childhood, I include what I know now in my memories. This specifically refers to my mother and what she went through at different points in my childhood. Though through this piece, I wanted to encapsulate how I viewed her as a child. How she made it special for us when felt differently. I focused on the good for this project because as a kid, she kept it hidden. When she saw herself in me, she made sure I knew I was loved. I admire my mother like none other. I was raised in Ohio, my mother loved it there as did I. She made it a special place that felt like our secret. Chagrin Falls is a town that is tucked away, a place you don’t just find. Sometimes I feel like no one knows home like my mother and I. We share the same love for the town. When I am with her, there is a warmth I feel that words cannot explain. Though when I think of her, I am able to feel that warmth again.

Movie: Aftersun
I began my approach to this box with the intend of including the good and the bad. My original design included day and night imagery to symbolize the child-like innocence of unknowing a the reality of what it was. As I made progress, I decided to only encapsulate the good. My mother and I both struggle, though her struggling was something I was not comfortable with making art of.
